Taking good care of yourself during pregnancy is important...

Taking good care of yourself during pregnancy is important. Relatives, friends, and doctors advise you on what to do and what not to do to stay healthy, and all that information can be overwhelming. Here are a few simple tips to help you stay healthy during the trimesters.

Nutrition

It is important for you to consume variety of healthy food during pregnancy. You need about 300 extra calories per day. Do not worry about the weight you gain during this period. Consult your doctor for a well-planned diet chart.

Ensure that your diet is full of fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, lentils and whole grains.

Avoid

  • Raw Meat
  • Deli Meat
  • Fish with Mercury
  • Smoked Seafood
  • Soft cheese: Camembert, Roquefort, Feta. Gorgonzola
  • Unpasteurized milk
  • Caffeine: avoid it during the first trimester as it can lead to miscarriage
  • Alcohol: A big no

Exercise

Exercise is the second most important factor for a healthy delivery. Staying active during your trimester will help you in having easier, shorter, and less complicated labours.

Plan a routine of 30 minutes of exercise every day. This would boost your mood, help in better sleep, control weight, prevent backache, and improve circulation. You can:

  • Meditate
  • Walk
  • Swim
  • Do Pilates

Avoid over exerting yourself. Listen to your body.

Proper Sleep

Sleep is essential for your body to rest and recover. The best way to sleep during your pregnancy is SOS (Sleep on Side). Sleeping on your left side will increase the amount of blood and nutrients that reaches the placenta. Always remember to fold your knees and legs and keep a pillow in between.

Avoid

  • Sleeping on your back: it causes several problems such as backaches, breathing problems etc.
  • Sleeping on your stomach: As your abdomen undergoes changes, it becomes difficult to sleep or lay on your stomach.
