Vaccinations are recommended for babies to prevent the risk of diseases, because their immune systems are not fully mature to fight off infections. When the baby is developing in the mother’s womb, it is in a sterile environment. Babies’ stomachs produce less acid, making it easier for the ingested bacteria and viruses to multiply. According to the USD CDC’s Recommended Immunization Schedule, children 0-6 years of age should receive 24 vaccinations to protect them from up to 14 diseases by the time they complete 2 years of age.

Listed below are the important vaccinations for your baby:

  • Hepatitis A Vaccine: Hepatitis A is an acute liver disease caused by Hepatitis A virus. The symptoms of this disease can last for a few weeks to several months. It is highly important for a baby to get this shot two times, six months apart.
  • BCG Vaccine: This is a vaccine which prevents the deadly tuberculosis. It should be injected within 12 months of birth.
  • OPV or Polio Vaccine: Though India has been successful in its battle against polio, it is still important for you to give your child the polio vaccine. This vaccine is orally given for a period of 5 years.
  • DPT Vaccine: This vaccine is given to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. All the three diseases can be fatal, which is why it is highly important for every child to receive this immunization.
  • Measles Vaccine: It is mandatory to vaccinate your child with this as measles is a contagious viral infection.
  • Hib Vaccine: Haemophilus Influenzae Type b is a disease which infects the child’s brain and spinal cord. This vaccine is given to prevent the same, in four doses: first when the child is 2 months old, second when the child is 4 months old, third when the child is 6 months old and the fourth when the child is 12 months old.
